AUGUST: Our Culture, Our Stories,Our Spotlight

Our Culture, Our Stories

Dear Creative,

August is here, bringing with it the weight and wonder of who we are.

This month, we honour Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day, a sacred moment to reflect on Yoruba heritage, storytelling, and spiritual memory. But really, this isn’t just about one culture. It’s about all of us: Igbo, Hausa, Nupe, Efik, Idoma, and many more. Because at its core, culture is the stories we dare to carry forward.

Lately, many of us aren’t blocked. We’re tired. Tired of screaming into the void, chasing viral moments, and questioning the meaning behind it all. If you’ve found yourself whispering “What’s the point?” , you’re not alone.

Here’s a truth worth holding on to:

You don’t need fans to start. You only need one reader. One listener. One life changed by your words.

This August, we want to strip everything back to what matters most:

  • What if your story was on the radio again? Would it still matter if your name wasn’t trending?
  • What if those stories in your WhatsApp chats or buried Google Docs were actually your beginning? They are.
  • What if nostalgia isn’t a weakness, but a doorway?

Throughout the month, we’ll spotlight:

  • Writers who breathe life into Yoruba cosmology and spirituality
  • Creators transforming voice notes into gripping audio dramas
  • Writers turned directors fighting for the creative credit they deserve
  • First-time authors selling their stories on Selar in under 30 minutes
  • Creatives who haven’t yet finished their stories but remain true writers

Because writing isn’t dead — you’re just missing what it once felt like.

So this month, let’s return to the roots. Not just the ancestral roots — but the emotional roots of why we started writing in the first place.

Culture is not content. It’s communion. And your story? It’s ceremony.

Welcome to August. Let the words breathe again.
